Limehouse Banner

Kandinsky are currently developing a new play, Limehouse Nights. Inspired by the history of Chinese immigration to London's East End in the early twentieth century, Limehouse Nights will be performed in the former Limehouse Town Hall in spring 2010.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Limehouse was famous as the site of London’s original Chinatown. Although there were only ever about three hundred Chinese residents at one time, their presence in Limehouse sparked the popular imagination. Writers and artists depicted squalid opium dens, criminal masterminds and exotic oriental women, all of which contributed to popular perceptions of the ‘yellow peril’. Today, this history is largely unknown. The play moves between the now-vanished Chinatown of the 1910s, and Limehouse today, exploring how the echoes of disappeared communities and forgotten lives still resonate through the streets of the modern city.
